Music for men and all that jazz: Steven Gallavin at TEDxLausanne

------------------------- Steven Gallavin (http://www.gallavin.com) began singing at an early age and is regularly involved the local music scene. In 1999, he created the jazz band "Late Nights", with which he performs in different venues including the Cully Jazz Festival. In 2004, Steven became a gay activist for LGBT rights and started lobbying for health in the gay community. He worked with health authorities to open the gay health centre: Checkpoint Vaud. Currently, he is a project manager in HIV prevention among gay men for the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. Steven performs two songs from his debut album Mad about the Boy (2010). He also explains how two of his biggest commitments--vocal jazz and gay activism--finally came to make one. Steven sings beyond the stereotypes of the commonly expected jazz crooner and diva. He gives to some of the greatest jazz standards their original essence--Noel Coward's song "Mad about the Boy" was originally written for his long term male lover. At the piano: François Bettens. -------------------------------- n the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
